Resumen Objetivos: Determinar la asociación entre el consumo de comida chatarra, actividad física y estado nutricional en pacientes con colelitiasis a la ecografía (casos), comparados con controles aparentemente sanos sin colelitiasis a la ecografía, en consulta externa del Hospital EsSalud II Huánuco. Materiales y Método: Estudio de casos y controles. Se incluyeron 107 casos y 107 controles. El consumo de comida "chatarra" se valoró con la encuesta validada por RSEQ (Red deportiva estudiantil de Québec), la frecuencia del consumo (días por semana); la actividad física por el cuestionario IPAQ (Cuestionario Internacional de Actividad Física) y el estado nutricional mediante el índice de masa corporal. En el análisis estadístico se empleó el χ2, U de Mann Whitney y Odds Ratio (p < 0,05). Resultados: La edad y la procedencia no fueron significativos. El consumo de comida "chatarra" estuvo asociado a la colecistitis (OR 10,30; IC 95% 5,48-19,37). La actividad física moderada-vigorosa (≥ 600 MET) promovió el diagnóstico de colecistitis (OR 8,38; IC 95% 4,54-15,48) y el estado nutricional (sobrepeso o mayor), en forma significativa, promovía la colecistitis (OR 11,38; IC 95% 6,01-21,55). Ser femenino estuvo asociado al desarrollo de colecistitis (OR 2,06; IC 95% 1,19-3,55). Conclusión: El consumo de comida "chatarra", la actividad física moderada-vigorosa (≥ 600 MET), el estado nutricional (sobrepeso o mayor) y el género (femenino) fueron asociados al desarrollo de colelitiasis diagnosticados mediante ecografía.


Aim: To determine the association between junk food consumption, physical activity and nutritional status in patients with cholelithiasis on ultrasound (cases), compared with apparently healthy controls without cholelithiasis on ultrasound, in an outpatient EsSalud II Hospital, Huánuco Hospital, 2017. Materials and Method: Case-control study. 107 cases and 107 controls were included. The consumption of junk food was assessed with the survey validated by RSEQ (Québec Student Sports Network), the frequency of consumption (days per week); Physical activity through the IPAQ questionnaire (International Physical Activity Questionnaire) and nutritional status through the Body Mass Index. The chi-square, Mann Whitney U and Odds Ratio (p < 0.05) were used in the statistical analysis. Results: Gender, age and origin were not significant. None or low consumption of "junk" food were associated with cholecystitis (OR 0.097; 95% CI 0.052-0.182). Low physical activity (< 600 MET) did not promote the diagnosis of cholecystitis (OR 0.119; 95% CI 0.064-0.22) and the nutritional status (normal weight), significantly, did not promote cholecystitis (OR 0.09; 95% CI 0.05-0.167). Being male was associated with the non-development of cholecystitis (OR 0.48; 95% CI 0.281-0.838). Conclusión: Low or no consumption of "junk" food, low physical activity (< 600 MET), nutritional status (normal) and gender (male) were associated for the non-development of cholelithiasis diagnosed by ultrasound.

Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine condition that occurs in women and is associated with problems such as menstrual irregularities; hirsutism; obesity; insulin resistance; acne; and later life with diabetes mellitus and uterine cancer. The study aim was to assess phenotype characteristics and risk factors of polycystic ovarian syndrome among nursing students. Cross sectional study (descriptive) included a sample of 400 females from Faculty of Nursing, Zagazig University, Egypt.Tools were used for data collection; structured-interviewing questionnaire sheet, data related to anthropometric measures, risk factors about PCOS and observational check list about phenotype characteristics of PCO. The results showed that, (6%) of the studied student females had family history of PCO, nearly half of them had fast food, more than half of studied student females had hirsutism, more than one quarter had acne, (14.5%) had menstrual irregularity and one third of them had continuous abnormal weight gain. Also, this study showed that lack of awareness were found among majority of girls about PCOS. Therefore, it could be concluded that, family history of PCOS, obesity and fast food diet habits are found to be the predisposing factors for development of PCOS. The risk of PCOS increases with presence of one or more identified predisposing factors. Most of the factors tested as predisposing factors in our study are interlinked to each other and are mostly modifiable Although that PCOS is prevalent endocrine disorder, there was poor knowledge among student females in Faculty of Nursing Zagazig University. The study recommended screening program from ministry of health for early detection of predisposing factors of PCOS including the secondary school students and faculties students through educational programs and messages through the counseling, brochures, to increase student's awareness about PCOS symptoms. Further research on larger sample size to identify how the problem is risky and how to deal it. Including the problem in social media and healthy channels. K

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To systematically review the evidence for the association between food consumption according to processing and cardiometabolic factors in adults and/or the elderly. METHOD Two independent evaluators analyzed the electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science and Lilacs until December 2018. We used the following terms: (convenience foods OR food processing OR highly-processed OR industrialized foods OR minimally-processed OR prepared foods OR processed foods OR ultra-processed OR ultraprocessed OR ultra processed OR unprocessed) AND (metabolic syndrome OR hypertension OR blood pressure OR diabetes mellitus OR glucose OR glycaemia OR insulin OR cholesterol OR triglycerides OR blood lipids OR overweight OR obesity) AND (adult OR adults OR adulthood OR aged OR elderly OR old). We assessed methodological and evidence qualities, and also extracted information for the qualitative synthesis from the selected studies. RESULTS Of the 6,423 studies identified after removing duplicates, eleven met the eligibility criteria. The main food classification we used was Nova. The consumption of ultra-processed foods was positively associated with overweight and obesity, high blood pressure and metabolic syndrome. All articles included met more than 50% of the methodological quality criteria. The quality of evidence was considered moderate for the outcome overweight and obesity and weak for hypertension and metabolic syndrome. CONCLUSIONS The Nova food classification stands out in the area of nutritional epidemiology when assessing the effects of food processing on health outcomes. Although caution is required in the interpretation, the results indicated that the consumption of ultra-processed foods can have an unfavorable impact in the health of individuals.


RESUMO OBJETIVO Revisar sistematicamente as evidências da associação entre consumo de alimentos de acordo com o processamento e fatores cardiometabólicos em adultos e idosos. MÉTODOS Dois avaliadores independentes analisaram as bases de dados eletrônicas PubMed, Web of Science e Lilacs até dezembro de 2018. Os seguintes termos foram utilizados: (convenience foods OR food processing OR highly-processed OR industrialized foods OR minimally-processed OR prepared foods OR processed foods OR ultra-processed OR ultraprocessed OR ultra processed OR unprocessed) AND (metabolic syndrome OR hypertension OR blood pressure OR diabetes mellitus OR glucose OR glycaemia OR insulin OR cholesterol OR triglycerides OR blood lipids OR overweight OR obesity) AND (adult OR adults OR adulthood OR aged OR elderly OR old). Nos estudos incluídos foram avaliadas as qualidades metodológica e de evidência, além de extraídas informações para a síntese qualitativa. RESULTADOS Dos 6.423 estudos identificados após a remoção das duplicatas, onze preencheram os critérios de elegibilidade. A principal classificação de alimentos utilizada foi a Nova. O consumo de alimentos ultraprocessados foi positivamente associado com excesso de peso e obesidade, hipertensão arterial e síndrome metabólica. Todos os artigos incluídos preencheram mais de 50% dos critérios de qualidade metodológica. A qualidade de evidência foi considerada moderada para o desfecho excesso de peso e obesidade e fraca para hipertensão arterial e síndrome metabólica. CONCLUSÕES A classificação de alimentos Nova se destaca na área da epidemiologia nutricional ao avaliar os efeitos do processamento de alimentos sobre desfechos em saúde. Embora seja necessária prudência na interpretação, os resultados indicam que o consumo de alimentos ultraprocessados pode ter impacto desfavorável sobre a saúde dos indivíduos.

Abstract: Objective: Evaluate association of dietary patterns with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and metabolic markers. Materials and methods: 654 adolescents from Guadalajara, Jalisco, participated in a cross-sectional study. Diet was evaluated using a food frequency questionnaire; 24 food groups were integrated, and dietary patterns were derived using cluster analysis. MetS was defined according to International Diabetes Federation (IDF), Cook and colleagues, Ford and colleagues, and de Ferranti and colleagues criteria. Results: Dietary patterns identified were: "DP1", "DP2", and "DP3". Among males, "DP3" was associated with MetS (Cook and collaborators) (OR, 12.14; 95%CI, 1.66-89.05), hypertriglyceridemia (OR, 3.89; 95%CI, 1.01-15.07), and insulin resistance (OR, 6.66; 95%CI, 1.12-39.70). "DP2" was associated with abdominal obesity (OR, 5.11; 95%CI, 1.57-16.66). Conclusions: "DP3" entertained a greater risk of MetS, hypertriglyceridemia, and insulin resistance, while "DP2" possessed a greater risk of abdominal obesity among adolescent males.


Resumen: Objetivo: Evaluar la asociación de patrones dietarios (PD) con síndrome metabólico (SM) y marcadores metabólicos. Material y métodos: Estudio transversal con 654 adolescentes. Dieta evaluada con el cuestionario "frecuencia de consumos de alimentos"; se identificaron 24 grupos de alimentos, para obtener PD mediante análisis de conglomerados. SM se definió según los criterios: Federación de Diabetes Internacional (IDF), Cook y colaboradores, Ford y colaboradores y Ferranti y colaboradores. Resultados: Se identificaron tres PD: "PD1", "PD2" y "PD3". En hombres, "PD3" se asoció con SM (Cook y colaboradores) (RM, 12.14; IC95%, 1.66-89.05), hipertrigliceridemia (RM, 3.89; IC95%, 1.01-15.07) y resistencia a insulina (RM, 6.66; IC95%, 1.12-39.70). El patrón "PD2" se asoció con obesidad abdominal (RM, 5.11; IC95%, 1.57-16.66). Conclusiones: El patrón "PD3" aumenta el riesgo de SM, hipertrigliceridemia y resistencia a insulina y el "PD2" el riesgo de obesidad abdominal en adolescentes hombres.

Abstract: With increased globalization, Latin America is experiencing transitions from traditional lifestyle and dietary practices to those found in higher income countries. Healthy diets, physical activity and optimal body fat can prevent approximately 15% of cancers in low-income and 20% in high-income countries. We discuss links between diet, obesity, physical activity and cancer, emphasizing strategies targeting children to decrease risk of obesity, control obesity-related risk factors, and reduce sedentary lifestyles, as this will have high impact on adult cancer risk. We focus on individual behaviors, economic, cultural and societal changes that may guide future interventions in the Americas.


Resumen: América Latina está experimentando transiciones desde estilos de vida tradicional y prácticas dietéticas a las de países de ingresos altos. Las dietas saludables, la actividad física y la grasa corporal óptima pueden prevenir aproximadamente el 15% de cánceres en países de bajos ingresos y 20% en países de ingresos altos. Discutimos los vínculos entre la dieta, obesidad, actividad física y cáncer; haciendo hincapié en estrategias dirigidas a niños, para disminuir el riesgo de obesidad y reducir la vida sedentaria. Nos enfocamos en comportamientos individuales, cambios económicos, culturales y sociales que pueden guiar futuras intervenciones en las Américas.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: There may be a direct association between consumption of ultra-processed foods and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, under the assumption that the high glycemic index of these food products could stimulate the entire chronic inflammation cascade, along with an indirect association mediated by obesity. The types of food consumed, including ultra-processed products, strongly influence obesity, and are also associated with higher serum CRP levels. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to investigate whether the caloric contribution of ultra-processed foods to diet is associated with CRP levels, independent of body mass index (BMI). DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional analysis on the Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) baseline cohort (2008-2010). METHODS: Dietary information, obtained through a food frequency questionnaire, was used to estimate the percentage of energy contribution from ultra-processed food to individuals' total caloric intake. CRP levels were the response variable. Sex-specific associations were estimated using generalized linear models with gamma distribution and log-link function. RESULTS: Ultra-processed food accounted for 20% of total energy intake. Among men, after adjustments for sociodemographic characteristics, there was no association between ultra-processed food intake and CRP levels. Among women, after adjustment for sociodemographic characteristics, smoking and physical activity, the highest tercile of ultra-processed food intake was associated with mean CRP levels that were 14% higher (95% confidence interval: 1.04-1.24) than those of the lowest tercile. However, after considering BMI, this association lost statistical significance. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that the positive association of ultra-processed food consumption with CRP levels among women seems to be mediated by the presence of adiposity.

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between food intake (considering the nature, extent, and purpose of food processing) during pregnancy and overweight, obesity, and gestational diabetes mellitus conditions. This is a cross-sectional study conducted among 785 adult women in singleton pregnancies (between 24th and 39th weeks of gestation) in Brazil. Usual food intake was estimated by the Multiple Source Method, using two 24-hour dietary recalls. The food groups of interest in this study were the unprocessed or minimally processed foods and ultra-processed foods. The World Health Organization criteria for the diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus and the Atalah criteria for excess weight were used. Adjusted multinomial logistic regression models were used to assess the relationship between energy contribution (%E) from foods with overweight and obesity conditions and, adjusted logistic regression models for gestational diabetes mellitus. In total, 32.1% participants were overweight, 24.6% were obese, and 17.7% of women were diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus . After adjustments, an inverse association between the highest tertile of %E from the intake of unprocessed or minimally processed foods and obesity was found [0.49 (0.30-0.79)]. Moreover, a positive association between the highest tertile of %E from ultra-processed food intake [3.06 (1.27-3.37)] and obesity was observed. No association between food intake (considering the nature, extent, and purpose of food processing) during pregnancy and overweight or gestational diabetes mellitus was found. The findings suggest a role of food processing in obesity but not in gestational diabetes mellitus. Further research is warranted to provide robust evidence on the relationship between the role of processed foods in obesity and gestational diabetes mellitus.


O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a relação entre o consumo de alimentos (considerando a natureza, extensão e propósito do processamento de alimentos) durante a gestação e sobrepeso, obesidade e diabetes mellitus gestacional. Estudo transversal realizado com 785 mulheres adultas com gestações únicas (24ª-39ª semanas de gestação) no Brasil. O consumo usual de alimentos foi estimado usando o Multiple Source Method, usando recordatórios alimentares de 24 horas. Os grupos alimentares de interesse neste estudo foram os alimentos não-processados e minimamente processados e os alimentos ultraprocessados. Os critérios da Organização Mundial da Saúde para diagnóstico de diabetes mellitus gestacional e critérios de Atalah para excesso de peso foram usados. Modelos de regressão logística multinomial foram empregados para avaliar a relação entre a contribuição energética (%E) de alimentos e sobrepeso e obesidade, e modelos de regressão logística ajustados foram usados para diabetes mellitus gestacional. No total, 32,1% das gestantes estavam com sobrepeso, 24,6% com obesidade e 17,7% foram diagnosticadas com diabetes mellitus gestacional. Após ajustes, uma associação inversa entre obesidade e o maior tercil de %E do consumo de alimentos não-processados ou minimamente processados foi encontrada [0,49 (0,30-0,79)]. Além disso, uma associação positiva entre obesidade e o maior tercil de %E do consumo de alimentos ultraprocessados [3,06 (1,27-3,37)] foi observada. Nenhuma associação entre consumo de alimentos (considerando a natureza, extensão e propósito do processamento de alimentos) durante a gestação e sobrepeso ou diabetes mellitus gestacional foi encontrada. Os resultados sugerem o papel do processamento de alimentos na obesidade, mas não na diabetes mellitus gestacional. Pesquisas adicionais são necessárias para fornecer evidências robustas sobre a relação entre o papel do processamento de alimentos na obesidade e na diabetes mellitus gestacional durante a gestação.


El objetivo del presente estudio fue investigar la relación entre el consumo de comida (considerando la naturaleza, alcance, y propósito del procesamiento de comida) durante el embarazo y el sobrepeso, obesidad, y diabetes mellitus gestacional. Se realizó un estudio transversal con 785 mujeres adultas de embarazos únicos (24ª-39ª semanas de gestación) en Brasil. El consumo habitual se estimó mediante un Multiple Source Method, usando dos encuestas de 24-hour en relación con los hábitos alimentarios. Los grupos de comidas de interés en el presente estudio fueron los mínimamente procesados o sin procesar y los productos de comida ultraprocesada. Se utilizaron criterios de la Organización Mundial de la Salud para el diagnostico de diabetes mellitus gestacional, y los criterios Atalah para el sobrepeso. Se utilizaron modelos ajustados de regresión logística multinomial para evaluar la relación entre la contribución energética (%E) de comidas con el sobrepeso y la obesidad, y modelos ajustados de regresión logística para la diabetes mellitus gestacional . En total, un 32,1% sufrían sobrepeso, un 24,6% eran obesas, y un 17,7% de las mujeres fueron diagnosticadas con diabetes mellitus gestacional. Tras los ajustes, se encontró una asociación inversa entre el tercil más alto de %E, procedente del consumo de comidas sin procesar o mínimamente procesadas con la obesidad [0,49 (0,30-0,79)]. Asimismo, se encontró una asociación positiva entre el tercil más alto de %E de comida ultraprocesada [3,06 (1,27-3,37)] y la obesidad. No se encontró ninguna asociación entre el consumo de comida (considerando la naturaleza, alcance, y propósito de la comida procesada) durante el embarazo y el sobrepeso, respecto a la diabetes mellitus gestacional. Los resultados sugieren la importancia de la comida procesada en la obesidad pero no así en la diabetes mellitus gestacional. Son necesarias más investigaciones para proporcionar evidencias sólidas sobre la relación entre el papel de la comida procesada en la obesidad y diabetes mellitus gestacional durante el embarazo.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the consumption of processed and ultra-processed foods among children aged 13-35 months and its associated factors. We studied 1,185 children within the BRISA cohort in São Luís, Maranhão State, Brazil. The food consumption was investigated using a 24-hour recall, and the percentages of daily caloric intake and nutrients were estimated by food groups according to "NOVA" classification. We chose to categorize children belonging to the upper tertile of the distribution as having a high consumption of processed and ultra-processed food products. The Poisson regression model with robust variance estimation using a hierarchical modeling approach was used to calculate the prevalence ratios (PRs) of variables associated with high consumption of processed and ultra-processed food products. The mean energy intake was 1,226Kcal/day. After adjustments, there was a higher proportion of high consumption of processed and ultra-processed food products among children whose mothers had < 12 years of education and among children who were older than 16 months. Mothers with low schooling and children older than 16 months should be the targets of interventions aimed at reducing consumption of these food products and preventing adverse health outcomes in later life.


Resumo: O estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o consumo de alimentos processados e ultraprocessados por crianças entre 13 e 35 meses de idade e fatores associados. Estudamos 1.185 crianças da coorte BRISA em São Luís, Maranhão, Brasil. O consumo alimentar foi investigado com um recordatório de 24 horas, e os percentuais de ingestão diária de calorias e nutrientes foram estimados por grupos de alimentos de acordo com a classificação "NOVA". Optamos por categorizar as crianças pertencentes ao tercil superior da distribuição como tendo consumo elevado de produtos alimentícios processados e ultraprocessados. Foi utilizado um modelo de regressão Poisson com estimativa robusta de variância com modelagem hierárquica para calcular as razões de prevalência (RPs) das variáveis associadas ao consumo elevado de produtos alimentícios processados e ultraprocessados. A ingestão calórica média era 1.226Kcal/dia. Após os ajustes, houve uma proporção maior de consumo elevado de produtos alimentícios processados e ultraprocessados entre crianças cujas mães tinham menos de 12 anos de escola e entre crianças com mais de 16 meses de idade. As mães com baixa escolaridade e crianças acima de 16 meses devem ser alvos de intervenções para reduzir o consumo desses produtos alimentícios e prevenir os desfechos de saúde adversos na adolescência e idade adulta.


Resumen: El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el consumo de alimentos procesados y ultraprocesados por parte de niños entre 13 y 35 meses de edad y sus factores asociados. Estudiamos a 1.185 niños de la cohorte BRISA en São Luís, Maranhão, Brasil. El consumo alimentario fue investigado con un recordatorio de 24 horas, y los porcentajes de ingesta diaria de calorías y nutrientes fueron estimados por grupos de alimentos, de acuerdo con la clasificación "NOVA". Optamos por categorizar a los niños pertenecientes al tercil superior de la distribución como de consumo elevado de productos alimenticios procesados y ultraprocesados. Se utilizó un modelo de regresión Poisson de estimativa robusta de variancia con modelaje jerárquico para calcular las razones de prevalencia (RPs) de las variables asociadas al consumo elevado de productos alimenticios procesados y ultraprocesados. La ingesta calórica media era 1.226Kcal/día. Tras los ajustes, hubo una proporción mayor de consumo elevado de productos alimenticios procesados y ultraprocesados entre niños, cuyas madres contaban con menos de 12 años de escuela y entre niños con más de 16 meses de edad. Las madres con baja escolaridad y niños por encima de 16 meses deben ser objetivo de intervenciones para reducir el consumo de esos productos alimenticios y prevenir desenlaces de salud adversos en la adolescencia y edad adulta.

Food advertising on TV is a common marketing practice, and it is suspected of promoting obesogenic behaviours. The study aimed at evaluating if gadgets (toys) packaged with food increase food consumption, and if contemporary exposure to TV and/or advertising is a further promoting factor. Onehundred and twenty children (balanced according to gender and age groups, 3-6 and 7-10 years old) were randomised in an experimental setting designed as a 2x5 full factorial ad libitum eating study. The first factor was represented by the exposure to gadgets, organized on two levels, "food with gadget" (TOY) and "food alone" (NoTOY). The second one consisted in the exposure to TV and advertising along five levels (no exposure to TV, exposure to TV without advertising, exposure to TV and 1, 2, or 3 advertsements). Our results showed no significant differences when considering the groups even after taking into account the dependent variables. The medium spot group showed the lowest energy intake, but the difference between the other groups was not significant. TV advertising and the presence of gadgets (toys) do not influence caloric intake in children(AU)


La publicidad de alimentos en la televisión es una práctica común de comercialización, y se cree que puede promover comportamientos obesogénicos. El estudio tiene como objetivo evaluar si los gadgets (juguetes) empaquetados con alimentos aumentan el consumo de alimentos y si la exposición contemporánea a la televisión y / o la publicidad es un factor promotor adicional. Ciento veinte niños (agrupados por sexo y edad, 3-6 y 7-10 años de edad) fueron asignados al azar en una escuela de San Luis Potosí -México. Los niños fueron asignados al azar en el contexto experimental de un estudio de diseño factorial completo 2x5 de consumo de alimentos ad libitum. El primer factor estuvo representado por la exposición a juguetes y estuvo organizado en dos niveles: "alimento con juguetes" (TOY) y "alimento solo" (NoTOY). El segundo consistía en la exposición a la televisión y a publicidad televisiva a lo largo de cinco niveles (sin exposición a TV, exposición a TV sin publicidad, exposición a TV y a 1, 2 o 3 anuncios publicitarios). Nuestros resultados no mostraron diferencias significativas entre los grupos, incluso teniendo en cuenta las variables dependientes. Sólo en el grupo mediano al que se mostraron dos publicidades se observó el consumo de energía más bajo. La diferencia entre los otros grupos no fue significativa(AU)

Resumo Objetivos Avaliar a contribuição dos alimentos ultraprocessados no consumo alimentar de crianças pertencentes à área de abrangência de uma unidade básica de saúde e os fatores associados. Método Estudo transversal com amostra de conveniência de 204 crianças, entre dois a 10 anos, no Sul do Brasil. O consumo alimentar das crianças foi obtido por meio do Recordatório Alimentar de 24 horas e, posteriormente, os alimentos foram classificados em minimamente processados, processados para culinária e ultraprocessados. Um questionário semiestruturado foi aplicado para a coleta das variáveis sociodemográficas e antropométricas. O excesso de peso das crianças foi definido por meio do escore Z > 2 para menores de cinco anos e Z > +1 para entre cinco e 10 anos segundo o Índice de Massa Corporal para idade. Resultados A frequência de excesso de peso foi de 34% (IC95%: 28% a 41%). O consumo médio de energia foi de 1.672,3 kcal/dia, 47% (IC95%: 45% a 49%) provenientes dos ultraprocessados. No modelo de regressão linear múltipla, a escolaridade materna (r = 0,23; p = 0,001) e a idade da criança (r = 0,40; p < 0,001) foram associados à maior contribuição percentual dos ultraprocessados na alimentação (R = 0,42; p < 0,001). Adicionalmente foi observada uma tendência linear significativa para maior consumo de ultraprocessados quando os dados foram estratificados pela idade da criança e nível de escolaridade materna (p < 0,001). Conclusões A contribuição dos ultraprocessados é expressiva na alimentação infantil e a idade da criança mostrou-se como fator associado mais importante para o consumo desses produtos.


Abstract Objectives To evaluate the contribution of ultra-processed food (UPF) on the dietary consumption of children treated at a Basic Health Unit and the associated factors. Methodology Cross-sectional study carried out with a convenience sample of 204 children, aged 2-10 years old, in Southern Brazil. Children's food intake was assessed using a 24-h recall questionnaire. Food items were classified as minimally processed, processed for culinary use, and ultra-processed. A semi-structured questionnaire was applied to collect socio-demographic and anthropometric variables. Overweight in children was classified using a Z score >2 for children younger than 5 and Z score >+1 for those aged between 5 and 10 years, using the body mass index for age. Results Overweight frequency was 34% (95% CI: 28-41%). Mean energy consumption was 1672.3 kcal/day, with 47% (95% CI: 45-49%) coming from ultra-processed food. In the multiple linear regression model, maternal education (r = 0.23; p = 0.001) and child age (r = 0.40; p < 0.001) were factors associated with a greater percentage of UPF in the diet (r = 0.42; p < 0.001). Additionally, a statistically significant trend for higher UPF consumption was observed when data were stratified by child age and maternal educational level (p < 0.001). Conclusions The contribution of UPF is significant in children's diets and age appears to be an important factor for the consumption of such products.

Introduction : Obesity results from interaction between genetic and environmental risk factors. Objective: To evaluate the effect of three gene variants and environmental factors on obesity and overweight in young people aged 10 to 18 years in a Colombian population. Materials and methods: A total of 424 subjects were selected and separated into three groups for a cross-sectional study; 100 obese and 112 overweight subjects were matched with 212 normal-weight controls. Associations were evaluated between excess weight and three genetic polymorphisms ( UCP3- rs1800849, FTO -rs17817449, and CAPN10 -rs3842570), as well as the family history, the time spent watching television and playing video games, and the diet. Results: A family history of obesity, the time spent watching television and playing video games, the lack of breastfeeding, a low consumption of cereals, legumes, fruits, vegetables, and a high consumption of fast foods were characteristics typically found in obese individuals compared to controls. A significant association between genotype I/I (SNP19 of CAPN10 ) and excess weight was found even with an active lifestyle. In addition, significant associations between the C/C genotype of the UCP3 gene and the G/G and T/T genotypes of the FTO gene and excess weight were found only in young sedentary individuals. Conclusions: In this population, inadequate diet and sedentary lifestyle increased the risk of excess weight. Genotype I/I of SNP19 in CAPN10 was significantly associated with excess weight. In contrast, FTO and UCP3 variants exhibited effects only in sedentary environments.


Introducción. La obesidad resulta de la interacción entre factores de riesgo genéticos y ambientales. Objetivo. Evaluar el efecto de tres variantes genéticas y factores ambientales en el exceso de peso en jóvenes de 10 a 18 años de Medellín, Colombia. Materiales y métodos. Se hizo un estudio transversal en 424 jóvenes divididos en tres grupos: 100 obesos, 112 jóvenes con sobrepeso, y, pareados con ellos, 212 jóvenes con peso adecuado, que conformaron el grupo de control. Se evaluó la asociación entre tres polimorfismos genéticos ( UCP3 -rs1800849, FTO -rs17817449 y CAPN10 -rs3842570) y el exceso de peso, así como su interacción con antecedentes familiares de enfermedad, el tiempo dedicado a ver televisión y a jugar videojuegos y el consumo de alimentos. Resultados. Los antecedentes familiares de obesidad, la dedicación de más de dos horas al día a ver televisión y jugar videojuegos, la falta de lactancia materna, el bajo consumo de cereales, legumbres, frutas y verduras y el gran consumo de comidas rápidas fueron más frecuentes entre los obesos que en los controles. Se observó una asociación significativa entre el genotipo I/I (SNP19 del CAPN10 ) y el exceso de peso, incluso en los jóvenes que llevaban una vida activa. Además, se encontró una asociación significativa entre los genotipos C/C del UCP3 y G/G y T/T del FTO y el exceso de peso, pero solo en los jóvenes sedentarios. Conclusiones. En esta población, la alimentación inadecuada y el sedentarismo aumentaron el riesgo de exceso de peso. El genotipo I/I de SNP19 del CAPN10 se asoció significativamente con el exceso de peso. Algunas variantes del FTO y el UCP3 mostraron tener efecto solo en jóvenes sedentarios.

Objetivo. Determinar la influencia de centros extermos de expendio de comida rápida, en el estado nutricional de escolares entre 7 y 11 años. Metodología. Estudio descriptivo, transversal y comparativo. Se evaluaron 350 escolares en las I.E. 1059 María Inmaculada "A" e I.E. Melitón Carvajal "B". Resultados. Ambas instituciones educativas presentaron alta prevalencia de sobrepeso y obesidad (MI=43%, MC=33%), sedentarismo (MI=67%, MC=89%), consumo de loncheras no saludables (MI=60%, MC=72%), exposición a centros de comida rápida (MI=37%, MC=23%), ambos padres de familia con sobrepeso u obesidad (MI=66%, MC=73%). Los escolares de la IE. "A" con una escala mayor a cuatro puntos en asistencia a establecimientos de comida rápida cercanos a esta institución, presentan 2.5 veces más riesgo de padecer sobrepeso u obesidad, de modificar este factor la prevalencia de esta condición disminuiría en 5.9%. Conclusión. La sobreexposición a centros de expendio de comida rápida cerca a las instituciones educativas es un factor determinante en la presencia de sobrepeso u obesidad en los escolares.


Objective. To determine the influence of fast food centers in the nutritional state of students between seven and eleven years old. Methodology. Descriptive study, prospective, tranversal and comparative. 350 students were evaluated in the I.E (educational institution) "A" and I.E. "B". Results. Both educational institutions presented a high overweight and obesity prevalence (MI=43%, MC=33%), sedentary (MI=67%, MC=89%), non-healthy and obesity prevalence (MI=43%, MC=33%), sedentary (MI=67%, MC=89%), non-healthy lunchbox consumption (MI=60%,, MC=72%), exposure to fast food centers (MI=37%, MC=23%), both parents with overweight and obesity (MI=66%, MC=73%). Students from IE "A" with a scale higher than four points in assistance to fast food centers close to this institution, present 2.5 times fast food centers close to this institution, present 2.5 times creater risk of suffering from overweight or obesity. If this factor is changed, the prevalence of this condition would change 5.9%. Conclusions. The overexposure to fast food centers close to educational institutions is a determinant factors in the presence of overweight and obesity on students.

To correlate ovarian and uterine morphology in sub fertile patients having polycystic ovarian syndrome with their body mass index [BMI] and eating habits One hundred subjects were included in this cross sectional study having ages between 20-40 years with history of subfertility for the past two years. BMI [kg/m2] was measured according to WHO protocol. Ovarian volume, follicle count and size, uterine area, endometrial thickness were measuredsonographically and noted. Dietary habits were recorded by a structured questionnaire from all participants According to BMI two groups of 50 subjects each were formed; group I= 25.6 +/- 4.7 kg/m2 and group II= 28.6 +/- 5.7 kg/m2. The follicular count was 14.41 +/- 2.18 and 12.75 +/- 2.80; the follicular size [in mm] was 8.23 +/- 0.41and 3.29 +/- 0.25 [p-value 0.023 and 0.001]. The uterine area [in cm2] and endometrial thickness [in cm] was 86.9 +/- 25.7 and 117.2 +/- 29 [p-value 0.001 and0.05]. The ovarian volume [OV] estimated by trans-abdominal scan [TAS] was10.87 +/- 2.49 cm3 and 14.33 +/- 3.17 cm3 [p-value=0.022]. The trans-vaginal scan[TVS] showed OV; 11.44 +/- 2.36 cm3 and 14.79 +/- 2.19 cm3 [p-value=0.034]. A weak positive correlation of BMI with OV [TVS] was observed [r=0.05]. The ovarian volume in those women who consumed fast food frequently was significantly raised as compared to those who rarely ate fast food; the difference was 14.57 +/- 3.75 vs. 9.62 +/- 2.43 [p value 0.00]. With increasing body mass index the ovarian volume, uterine area and endometrial thickness increases. However the follicular count and follicular size is reduced with higher BMI

Determinar el perfil clínico - metabólico relacionado con el riesgo cardiovascular en adolescentes escolarizados de ambos sexos de Barquisimeto. Se estudiaron 500 adolescentes entre 15 y 19 años de edad (253 hombres y 247 mujeres). La selección se realizó en 2 etapas: a) muestreo aleatorio estratificado de 18 instituciones de educación media - diversificada y 3 instituciones de educación universitaria y b) muestreo no probabilístico accidental de los adolescentes en dichas instituciones. Se evaluó índice de masa corporal, presión arterial, perfil lipídico, glicemia y resistencia a la insulina según HOMA - IR. Hubo diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre las medidas de tendencia central, tanto en hombres como en mujeres, de todas las variables excepto en el índice de masa corporal, LDL - Colesterol y glicemia. Las prevalencias de alteraciones clínico - metabólicas fueron: exceso de peso (21,2%), resistencia insulínica (20,4%), HDL - Colesterol bajo (17,7%), hipercolesterolemia total (16%), LDL - Colesterol elevado (14,5%), hipertrigliceridemia (14,2%), hipertensión arterial (1,8%) e hiperglicemia (0,2%); 22,4% presentó dos o más alteraciones clínico - metabólicas y 9,6% tres o más. Solo hubo diferencias estadísticamente significativas en las prevalencias de exceso de peso, HDL - colesterol bajo e hipertrigliceridemia, las cuales fueron mayores en hombres con una razón de 1,6 (IC95% 1,1 - 2,2); 2,1 (IC95% 1,4 - 3,2) y 1,7 (IC95% 1,1 - 2,7), respectivamente. Se encontró una elevada prevalencia de alteraciones clínico - metabólicas con mayor riesgo de exceso de peso, HDL - C bajo e hipertrigliceridemia en hombres, lo cual amerita atención de las autoridades de salud de la región(AU)


To determine the clinical - metabolic profile related to cardiovascular risk among adolescent students, of both sexes, from Barquisimeto. The study was carried out on 500 adolescents between 15 and 19 years old (253 men and 247 women). The selection was carried out in two stages: a) Stratified random sampling of 18 secondary schools and 3 universities and b) Non-probabilistic accidental sampling of adolescents in such institutions. The body mass index, blood pressure, lipid profile, glycemia, and insulin resistance according HOMA-IR were evaluated. There were statistically significant differences between sexes, in all the variables except in body mass index, LDL -Cholesterol and glycemia. The prevalence of clinical -metabolic alterations were: Excess weight (21.2%), insulin resistance (20.4%), low HDL cholesterol (17.7 %), total hypercholesterolemia (16%), high LDL cholesterol (14.5 %), hypertriglyceridemia (14.2%), hypertension (1.8%) and hyperglycemia (0.2%); 22.4% presented two or more clinical-metabolic alterations and (9.6%) three or more. There were just statistically significant differences in the prevalence of excess weight, low HDL cholesterol and hypertriglyceridemia, which were higher in men, with a ratio of 1.6 (CI95% 1.1 - 2.2); 2.1 (CI95% 1.4 - 3.2) and 1.7 (CI95% 1.1 - 2.7), respectively. A high prevalence of clinical - metabolic alterations was found with increased risk of being overweight, low HDL - C and hypertriglyceridemia in men, which merits attention of health authorities in the region(AU)

Snack foods are products easy to handle. The objective of this work was to determine their consumption, proximate composition and fatty acid profile of snack food consumed by school age children of Metropolitan Region of Chile. To reach these goals, 203 schoolchildren were interviewed to determine snack foods consumption frequency and preference. Results showed that, this type of food represents an important pattern in diet. The highest snack consumption were potatoes chips type American and plain, chocolate cookies (small package) and corn chips. Proximate composition and fatty acids profile were determinate for these foods, each analysis was carried out in duplicate and three samplings were performed. Four snack foods analyzed had a significant fat content near 25 g/100 g and low contents of protein and total dietary fiber, indicating that these foods are products with high fat and caloric intake. For fatty acids profile, cookies presented the highest content of SFA, with 63 g/100 for PUFA content, the potato chips plain showed a high content, 60,3 g/100 g. These products present a high contribution in fat and energy, their high frequency consumption could be an important factor in the high rates of obesity observed in recent years in school age-children in the Metropolitan Region of Chile.


Los alimentos tipo bocadillo son productos fáciles de manipular que no requieren preparación. El objetivo de esta investigación fue determinar la incidencia del consumo, composición química, aporte calórico y perfil de ácidos grasos de alimentos tipo bocadillo de mayor consumo en la población escolar de la Región Metropolitana de Chile. Se realizó una encuesta a 203 escolares para determinar su frecuencia y preferencia. Los resultados indicaron un alto consumo, mostrando mayor preferencia por cuatro tipos de bocadillo, chips de papas fritas corte americano y liso, galletas con chispas de chocolate en paquete pequeño y chips de maíz. A estos alimentos se les determinó análisis proximal y perfil de ácidos grasos, para lo cual se realizó 3 muéstreos con muestras compuestas y análisis en duplicado. Los cuatro alimentos tipo de bocadillo estudiados presentan un alto contenido de materia grasa con valores cercanos al 25 g/100 g, además de tener bajos contenidos de proteínas y fibra dietaria total llevando a considerar por consiguiente a este tipo de alimento como productos con un alto contenido graso y aporte calórico. El perfil de ácidos grasos demostró, en tres de los cuatro tipos de bocadillo analizados, un alto contenido de AGS, mostrando la grasa de las galletas un valor de AGS cercano a 64g/100 g, solo los chips de papas fritas corte liso mostraron una adecuada relación AGPI/AGS. Estos productos presentan un alto aporte en grasa y energía, su alta frecuencia de consumo podría ser un factor importante en los altos índices de obesidad observados en los últimos años en escolares de la Región Metropolitana.
